When I first checked into Lato Boutique Hotel, I had no idea just how central it truly was— not only because of its location but also as the perfect hub for discovering the best of Heraklion and beyond. Tucked just steps from the Venetian Harbor and surrounded by a maze of cultural, culinary, and historical treasures, this stylish city hotel became more than just a place to sleep. It became my personal gateway to the heart of Crete.
Whether you’re staying a weekend or using Heraklion as your base for a longer island adventure, here are my top 10 things to do right around Lato Boutique Hotel—each one within easy reach.
1. Step into Myth at the Palace of Knossos
No trip to Crete is complete without visiting the Palace of Knossos, just a short drive from the hotel. This archaeological wonder once served as the ceremonial and political center of the Minoan civilization. As I wandered through its ancient halls and gazed at restored frescoes, I could almost hear the footsteps of history echoing beneath me.

The hotel’s concierge can arrange for you either a group or a private tour to Knossos. Make sure to visit the sight early in the morning (8:00 am) or around 17:30 when the sun isn’t too harsh. The tour takes approximately 2 hrs. Tickets (without a guide) cost €20 and are valid from 15 minutes before to 15 minutes after the selected time slot. Visitors are advised to arrive 30 minutes before their scheduled entry time.

One of my favorite ways to unwind was to walk along the Venetian fortifications, which wrap around the old city. The views are outstanding, especially near the bastions. Then I’d take a quiet break at Georgiadis Park or under the eucalyptus trees of Efkalyptos Park, just minutes from the hotel. a green escape in a vibrant urban setting and ideal for families to visit in the afternoons.

4. Savor Cretan Cuisine Near the Hotel
Staying at Lato Boutique Hotel means you’re steps away from two of Heraklion’s culinary stars:
- Epsilon Restaurant, serving a modern twist on Cretan tradition. Located on the top floor of Legacy Gastro Suites Hotel, Epsilon is an open-fire rooftop restaurant, in Kazantzakis Square, serving local cuisine and magical views.
- Herbs’ Garden, Lato Boutique’s very own rooftop gem, where I dined with a panoramic view of the old port and Venetian fortress.
From dakos and beef meatballs (keftedakia) to fresh seafood and raki, every bite told a story.
5. Stroll the Venetian Harbor at Sunset
Right outside Lato Boutique, I discovered one of Heraklion’s most iconic views —the Venetian Harbor. I walked all the way out to the Koules Fortress and beyond, following the 2.5km toward the lighthouse. As the sky turned gold, fishing boats bobbed in the water and locals leaned on the rails with ice creams in hand. It’s pure Heraklion. If you don’t have the time for this walk, just book a superior sea view room in Lato Boutique This is exactly the view your balcony will be looking at.
6. Shop Like a Local in the Old Market Streets

The pedestrian alleys 300m from the hotel are filled with local boutiques, spice stalls, and artisan shops. I stocked up on Cretan honey, handmade soaps, and leather sandals, each item a tangible memory. Don’t miss 1866 Street for an authentic shopping experience.
Key shopping streets include: Dedalou Str., Dikaiosinis Str., Chandakos Str., 25th August Str., Korai Str., 1821 Str., Evans Str.
7. Take a Day Trip to Nearby Villages
One of the joys of staying at Lato Boutique Hotel is how easy it is to reach Crete’s countryside. Thanks to its location near the main boulevard and its free guest parking (at Port Parking P2), getting on the road is easy. Within an hour’s drive, I visited:
Epano Archanes, a colorful village with wineries and neoclassical charm. Visit one of its taverns and enjoy your meal under the plane trees of the central square.
Fodele, the birthplace of El Greco, surrounded by orange groves. Visit the small El Greco museum and hike along the Fodele Gorge and small waterfalls.
Krasi, where a legendary 2,000-year-old tree shades a stone fountain.
Each one felt like a step into Crete’s slower, story-filled soul.

8. Taste Cretan Wine and Olive Oil

One afternoon, I joined a tasting tour that picked me up just near the hotel. We visited local wineries around Peza and Archanes, where I sampled Vidiano and Liatiko varietals alongside small-batch olive oils. The terroir of Crete is something you can taste—and it’s unforgettable.
Lyrarakis winery in Alagnes, Alexakis winery in Malades and Paterianakis winery in Melesses, are some of the wineries I recommend.
You can also go for the ‘Friendly Olive Tour’ in Vassilakis Estate in Neapoli and learn all about the fascinating process of olive oil production.

9. Catch a Local Event or Festival
Being based in central Heraklion meant I could spontaneously join local events. On my last evening, I stumbled upon an open-air concert at the Kazantzakis Theatre and, another night, a street food festival buzzing with families and music. Depending on when you visit, there’s often something exciting happening nearby. The most well-known festivals include, the Street Art Festival (17 June – 29 June) the Heraklion Summer Festival ( July 1st – September 30th ).

10. Discover Heraklion’s Vibrant Street Art Scene
One of the city’s most surprising treasures lies not in a museum—but on its walls. Just a short stroll from Lato Boutique Hotel, Heraklion’s alleys and abandoned buildings become open-air galleries showcasing vibrant street art and political murals. I wandered through neighborhoods like Lakkos, a once-forgotten area now revived with color, creativity, and cool cafés. It’s the perfect walk for art lovers, photographers, and anyone looking for a different side of Heraklion.
