As the sun begins to sink and the sky turns gold, there’s a little voice in my head that tugs at the heartstrings and puppeteers me in the direction of the nearest sun viewing spot. Thankfully, Mother Nature ensures this phenomenon happens at least twice per day, but as a night owl I rarely catch a sunrise. So, when searching for the best sunset spots and the most atmospheric rooftop bars in Heraklion, I quickly realised this city was made for golden hour.
Whether you are after a full dinner with panoramic sea views, a cocktail bar buzzing with music until late, or a quietly spectacular perch above the Lion Square, Heraklion delivers a budding rooftop culture that will make you want to pack up your old kit bag and stay forever.
Why Heraklion is One of Crete’s Best Places to Watch the Sunset
The sun rises in the East and sets in the West. Since Crete is a large island, it means it’s relatively easy to catch stunning scenes with dynamic atmospheres and locations. Heraklion, as the central city, offers the best of many worlds, with breathtaking natural light, historic architecture, a lively city atmosphere, and world-class food and drink, all within easy walking distance, and often all in the same place.
In Heraklion summertime, the sun is peaking above the horizon at around 6 am, and that is sometimes just a little too early when you’re in holiday mode! Thankfully, sunset here is just as stunning, and I had the perfect place in mind to enjoy it. Many hotels and boutiques in Heraklion have a rooftop terrace, and in my keen research (made harder by the day by inaccurate AI reviews), I had found the perfect spot. And as it turned out, I didn’t have far to travel, as the place was perched right on the rooftop of my hotel stay at the Lato Boutique Hotel Heraklion in the city centre.
Best Rooftop Bars in Heraklion for Sunset
The city faces north-west into the sea of Crete, meaning that on clear evenings the setting sun bathes the entire waterfront. You know those picture-perfect postcard scenes you’re told to picture as you sink back into a lounge chair? This is what it looks like in real life. It’s why I’m always choosing a Heraklion city break!
When they built the Koules Venetian Sea Fortress, they likely weren’t thinking it would make a great viewing spot for lively lunchers and romantic revellers, but all the same, it makes for a stunning view on a summer evening as you sip on a cocktail at one of the rooftop bars in Heraklion.
Heraklion Rooftop Restaurants with a View – Herbs’ Garden Restaurant
The website describes the Herbs’ Garden Restaurant as:
‘Top-notch experience awaits guests at the hotel’s onsite restaurants with enchanting settings, Mediterranean-inspired Cretan cuisine, fine service and panoramic view of the Cretan sea.’
Which, frankly, is a huge understatement. I was not prepared for the outstanding view of the iconic Koules Fortress that served as a backdrop to my Sfakian Pie (Traditional Cretan thin pancake filled with mizithra cheese, served with thyme honey and toasted walnuts)–– and incidentally just one of the things I can’t stop daydreaming about.

I booked a spot with the request: ‘rooftop restaurant overlooking Koules Fortress at sunset’–– which felt somewhat cheeky, since I gathered that was the plan for everyone turning up at the same time––with the intent of enjoying the best rooftop view in Heraklion. But the staff pulled it out of the bag, and by the time my red mullet “spetsiota” had arrived, the sun had made its way over to shake hands with the ocean and cast a million colours across the faces of the few clouds that had stubbornly stuck around for the evening. The whole sky was the exact colour of my salmon, and I myself was tickled pink.
Herbs’ Garden Heraklion Rooftop Restaurant – Lato Boutique Hotel (Open from 1st April)
Just like the rolling tides beyond the horizon, the golden hour in Heraklion shifts with the seasons. In midsummer (June to August), the sun sets late–– often after 8:30 pm. As someone with a circadian rhythm that prefers to sleep in, it means (for me at least) it’s the perfect time to wander out in search of sustenance at sunset! And long evenings mean long dinners, so I can enjoy that second or third glass of wine. Usually, the golden hour lasts around 45 minutes before fading into the blue hour, and all of a sudden, the extra lights blink on. But there, on the terrace of the Herbs’ Garden above the Lato Boutique, I swear it felt like hours. Sometimes, all you need is a great view, a great snack, and a moment alone with your thoughts to appreciate how lucky you are in the moment.

Chef Manolis Karakostas draws his inspiration from the Cretan landscape and the island’s exceptional produce, crafting a menu that balances contemporary Greek and Mediterranean cooking with a connection to traditional flavour, celebrating all things that make Cretan cuisine unique. Heraklion’s western coastline offers some of the island’s most memorable vistas, and if you happen to be popping by Heraklion’s bustling town streets earlier in the year, luck is still on your side. In April and May, sunset arrives earlier (around 7:30–8:00 pm), and the light is often particularly soft and golden–– exactly how I like my morning bougatsa. September and October also have their benefits. The sky may darken a little earlier, but you have the opportunity to enjoy it more freely as the summer crowds begin to thin.
Don’t forget:
- Sunset times in summer can be around 8–9 pm, and rooftop spots often fill up by dusk. Reservations are wise for popular venues.
- Dress in layers; even summer evenings can be breezy, and most rooftop bars are open-air and open from April to November.
- Entry to some hotel pools/bars may require a fee.
- Don’t forget your camera, the blend of Byzantine/Venetian landmarks and sea light makes Heraklion sunsets uniquely photogenic.
Heraklion’s Growing Rooftop Culture – What to Do in Heraklion at Night
Crete has been developing its rooftop culture and outdoor experience for some years, and it has some of the best rooftop bars with a view. When you have scenes as historical and holistically impressive as Crete, it’s no wonder. Everywhere you look, there’s charm, nature, and a story to be told. I spend most of my time exploring it, but sometimes, I just want to sit back and enjoy the mood. That’s when I hit the rooftop bars in search of that perfect vibe.

Toucan Skybar – Effortless Evenings Above Eleftherias Square
Having spent many summers (and perfect shoulder seasons) in Crete, I’ve stacked up a pretty good list of favourite haunts. Many of them happen to be bars. Toucan Cocktail Skybar in Eleftherias Square makes it to the top of the list of my favourite bars for good reason. They use the big ice cubes! I honestly can’t enjoy a Negroni without the ice cube fitting the glass perfectly. The ideal cocktail also needs to be paired with the right snack, which in this case, is great sushi!

Toucan isn’t a sit-down dinner kind of place; it’s a little livelier than that. It feels like a big lounge in the sky, the sort of place I would love to host a low-key wedding. It’s mostly the views and the subtle jungle vibes that drew me to this paradise, but it was the signature cocktails that kept me there. Plus, if you’re a sushi fan, there’s just enough on the menu to turn pre-drinks into a full evening of pleasure. For couples, it hits that sweet spot: energetic but still intimate enough to lean in close and watch the sun dip behind the city together.
Top Tip: If you’re visiting during peak season, arrive early; the outdoor seats at golden hour are worth it.
Toucan Skybar is best for: Sunset cocktails, music, and a vibrant city atmosphere that carries on late into the night.
Astoria Hotel Rooftop Pool – Eleftherias Square
Heraklion is one of the best destinations for travel in all seasons, but summertime means that two things are in full flow: the wine and the rooftop pool! My camera roll was maybe full of spectacular scenes as I have a keen eye for Crete sunset photography, but today was not the day for expert preparation. When I decided to hit the Astoria Hotel bar for the evening, I had packed my swimsuit ready, but not the camera! It felt like a good time to really be in the moment, and after a few lengths of the pool and a failed attempt to remember how to do the butterfly, I relaxed into a starfish shape and floated on the surface of the shimmering ròse water, feeling like I was swimming in the sunset sky!
Arrive an hour or two before sunset so you can swim while the light is still warm, then settle into a poolside lounger as the sky turns golden.
Astoria Hotel is best for: Epic mirror views and a tranquil setting.
Leonis IV – Sunset Above the Heart of Old Heraklion

Perched directly above Lion Square, you’re not just watching the sunset, below you is the effervescing Morosini Fountain, with Venetian buildings glowing behind and locals millingin and out of the soft shadows. It’s the kind of setting that naturally slows you down. Maybe you arrive
for a late afternoon drink and end up staying for dinner, or maybe it’s a spontaneous stop that turns into one of your favourite memories of the trip.
What makes Leonis IV especially appealing for couples is its year-round opening. Whether you’re visiting in peak summer or a quieter season, it’s one of the most reliable sunset spots in Heraklion where you can always count on a charming view.
Leonis IV is best for: Relaxed all-day dining, romantic views over Lion Square, and year-round rooftop charm.
On the Roof – Ibis Styles Heraklion Central Hotel
Some evenings call for something softer. If you’re seeking a slower pace for quiet conversation and endless views, head to the 6th floor of Central Hotel. That’s exactly where you’ll find On the Roof at Central Hotel. It’s one of those classic rooftop restaurants in Heraklion that feels easy and unhurried, perfect for couples who crave comfort food and want to linger over a meal, enjoying panoramic views of Heraklion and life beyond the harbour.
The views stretch gently across the city, and as the temperature drops, the atmosphere becomes even more inviting. To linger here is to enjoy the quiet life. It’s about comfort, conversation, and that shared moment when the lights of Heraklion begin to flicker on below. Just keep in mind, this is a summer-season spot, so it’s worth checking ahead if your trip falls outside peak months.
On the Roof is best for: Relaxed sunset dinners, quiet romance, and an easygoing rooftop experience.
Megaron Hotel and Veneto Restaurant

5th Bar at the GDM Megaron Hotel offers 180˚ panoramic views of the Aegean Sea and is open all year round, making it perfect for those days when a cold snap rolls in.
Veneto Restaurant is also open year-round. Full of character, it’s the ideal place to take in views of the Venetian Harbour and enjoy the spoils of the Mediterranean that stretch beyond the large windows by your table. With a focus on good ingredients, simplicity, passion, and consistency, Veneto is popular for good reason.
Best for: That all-year-round experience.
How to Get the Most from Heraklion’s Rooftop Bars
A few practical pointers from people who love the rooftop life:
- The season for outdoor and rooftop dining runs from April to late November, so it’s always wise to check the local opening hours. A handful of spots with indoor seating or glass-enclosed terraces stay open year-round.
- Book ahead for dinner venues, especially in July and August. Sea-view tables are in high demand.
- Dress in light layers: the evenings in Crete can cool quickly once the sun drops, even in summer, so light layers keep you comfortable whatever the temperature.
- Most open-air rooftops in Heraklion operate only when temperatures reliably reach 20°C or higher. If you are visiting in early spring or late autumn, always check the current opening status.
- The walk between Eleftherias Square, Lion Square and the Venetian Harbour is very short. A single evening could comfortably include drinks at Toucan Skybar followed by dinner at Herbs’ Garden.
- Non-residents are welcome at Lato Boutique’s ‘Herbs’ Garden Restaurant’ and the Astoria rooftop pool, so you do not need to be staying at a particular hotel to access the best views in Heraklion – unless if you want to face this view when you wake up every morning!
If you’re looking to maximise a slow pace of life but don’t want to cut out the benefits of that easy breezy city life, Heraklion might just be the place to find your next adventure! Sunset, sea, skybars and the sound of that next glass of wine approaching. Whether you’re searching for the best rooftop bars in Heraklion or unforgettable sunset spots in Heraklion, this city delivers some of the most atmospheric evenings in Crete. Book me in for next summer!
