A Year-Round Celebration in Heraklion, Crete
As a dedicated cultural traveler, my annual pilgrimage to Heraklion, Crete always aligns with its rich festival calendar. The city, blending ancient traditions with modern creativity, offers a series of immersive events that breathe life into its streets, monuments, and historic venues.
Whether you’re staying at Lato Boutique Hotel, overlooking the Venetian Harbor, or at the eco-conscious Olive Green Hotel in the vibrant city center, Heraklion is the ultimate base for discovering Crete’s cultural pulse.
Crete Festival (June-September)
Starting in 2021, Crete Festival is being organized from the Region of Crete and aims to highlight contemporary culture (from recognized artists and from individual groups) and at the same time connect it with emblematic monuments of Crete. Musical events (recitals, concerts) and theatrical performances are held for 3 months in archaeological and religious sites all over Crete. An unforgettable moment for this year was the concert of Giorgos Dalaras at the Eleftherna Archaeological Museum.
“Kathodon”– Heraklion Summer Street Art Festival (June)

Every summer, in June for 14 days, I stop to attend the Heraklion Summer Arts Festival. The city transforms into a pulsating stage for artists from diverse disciplines. The ‘Kathodon’ Festival (as it is called) offers joy and entertainment to people of all ages, through more than 100 events and actions, turning the Municipality of Heraklion into a great scene of artistic expression and creation. Various art events are presented in 27 places in the city center and 20 places in the periphery of the Municipality, in which hundreds of artists and a large number of volunteers participate!
I’ve sat under the starry skies at the Nikos Kazantzakis Open Air Theatre, watching spellbinding performances of classical music, contemporary dance, and dramatic theater. The Venetian Fortress, with its historic walls echoing the artistic brilliance, serves as a backdrop to opera performances that are as visually stunning as they are acoustically moving. The youthful energy of the city also finds its expression in the festival. The streets become canvases for graffiti artists, and plazas turn into stages for breakdancers and DJ battles. Kathodon is a festival that has it all and I look forward to attending it every beginning of the summer.

Candia Walls Festival (September)

A recent addition to Heraklion’s cultural calendar is the Candia Walls Festival, a spectacular 12-day event that brings the city’s Venetian Walls to life. This new cultural proposal aims to highlight and integrate these historic fortifications into the cultural life of residents and visitors alike. With over 35 events ranging from concerts and classic movie screenings to photo exhibitions, star observations, theater performances, and walking tours, the festival attracted more than 25,000 spectators in its inaugural year. The festival utilizes various locations within and around the Venetian Walls, including the Vittouri and Jesus Gates, the Makassi Arch, the Garden Theaters “Nikos Kazantzakis” and “Manos Hatzidakis”, the Municipal Summer Cinema “Bethleem”, and the ramparts and low squares of the walls. It’s a collaborative effort involving numerous local organizations, including the Heraklion Municipality Philharmonic, the Youth Symphony Orchestra of Crete, and the Hellenic Photographic Society of Heraklion, among others.

Events at the Cultural Center of Heraklion (November-June)

The Cultural Center of Heraklion offers a rich program of events from November to June, encompassing about 70 event days. Under the artistic direction of the internationally renowned maestro Myron Michaelidis, the center hosts a diverse array of performances. These include operatic monodramas, concerts featuring works by composers like Ludwig van Beethoven and Giacomo Puccini, theater productions such as William Shakespeare’s King Lear, dance nights, and various musical recitals. The center also caters to younger audiences with children’s theater productions. Some highlights of their program include tributes to composers like Mimis Plessas and Mikis Theodorakis.
I’ve attended mesmerizing performances by orchestras such as the Camerata of Munich and Vienna Young Virtuosi—all within walking distance from Olive Green Hotel.

Heraklion Jazz Festival (Autumn)
Autumn in Heraklion resonates with the cool sounds of jazz during the Heraklion Jazz Festival. It’s a melting pot of local and international talent where experimental beats meet classic jazz rhythms. I’ve spent many evenings swaying to the music in the vibrant atrium of the Cultural Conference Center of Heraklion, each one offering a unique ambiance that enhances the experience.
Heraklion Gastronomy Festival (October)

The Gastronomy Festival is a five-day celebration that usually takes place next to the Venetian Port of Heraklion across the Koules fortress, full of Cretan products and authentic flavors, live cooking and masterclasses by renowned chefs, treats and Cretan music. The festival aims to highlight and promote local products, strengthen the local economy, locality, and authenticity, and encourage all small producers who aim to highlight the Cretan diet and nutrition. Guests enjoy a variety of traditional dishes, such as dolmades, vegetable pies with handmade leaves and wild herbs, hochlios with maratha and artichokes, hand-apple pies, vlita greens with courgettes, hochlios with fat, vegetable pies, anthogalo, Cretan salad, pumpkin sponge, cuttlefish with spinach, hare stew, sizzling, nut in the wood oven, pork with fat, and boiled meat with game pilaf. The festival concludes with live music by artists, who introduce visitors to the concept of “giorti’ and the way of life in Crete.
Cretan Wine Fair ‘Oinotika’ (February)
February in Heraklion calls for a celebration of its ancient winemaking tradition at the Cretan Wine Fair ‘Oinotika’. Held in the International Exhibition Center in Gournes, this event is a treat for the senses. I’ve indulged in the rich flavors of local wines paired with exquisite Cretan delicacies, all the while enjoying the rhythmic strum of lutes and the energetic steps of traditional dances.
Bonus Tip: Lasithi Plateau’s Potato Festival (August)
Tip: I never miss the three-day potato festival in August in the village of Tzermiados (which promotes the local delicious potato grown on the Lasithi plateau) and the one-day tsikoudia-spirit festival in October in the seaside area of Heraklion (Karavola) which are also amazing opportunities to learn about Cretan traditions, to have fun with Cretan music and come close to Cretan hospitality from the locals.
Matala Beach Festival (July)

Tip: Matala Beach Festival is also not to be missed. The Matala Beach Festival is one of Europe’s largest free music festivals, combining fun with relaxation, offering to everyone the opportunity to escape from the stress of everyday life and enjoy three days full of music and dancing but also many activities, next to the famous beach with the caves. Every July for 3 days, this amazing event transforms the picturesque Matala beach in Crete into a vibrant hub of music, art, and culture. Big bands and leading artists of Greek and foreign music offer an unrepeatable spectacle against the background of the emblematic caves and the most beautiful sunsets. Εvery year for the last 11 years, the festival promises unique moments, for the lovers of the “flower children” reminding the ’60s decade when they lived freely under the Matala sky.
