When I checked into Olive Green Hotel, I didn’t expect Heraklion to be one of the best cities I’ve ever jogged in. Nestled in the heart of the city, the hotel placed me within walking distance of seaside promenades, historic landmarks, and shady green parks—all ideal routes to squeeze in some cardio while traveling.
Heraklion may be known for its Venetian harbor, Minoan ruins, and bold flavors, but it also has a surprising side: it’s compact, vibrant, and made for movement. While the city has its fair share of uphill streets, a bit of planning turns this into part of the charm. You’re never far from a great view, a seaside breeze, or a fresh-pressed juice to reward your run.
This is not just a guide for serious athletes. These jogging routes are perfect for solo travelers, couples on a health kick, or anyone who likes to balance out their vacations with a bit of wellness.
Let me take you through my favorite jogging routes in Heraklion, starting right from the front door of Olive Green Hotel.
1. Venetian Harbor to Koules Fortress and the Jetty

- Start/End Point: Olive Green Hotel to the Lighthouse
- Distance: ~6 km round trip,
- What You’ll See: Seafront promenade, Venetian shipyards, Koules Fortress, fishing boats
- Best Time: Early morning or just before sunset
This is the first run I took in Heraklion, and it left an impression. The paved route runs along the old harbor, where you’ll jog past fishermen setting up their lines and the sea catching gold under the morning sun. Koules Fortress welcomes us at the entrance to the jetty. You can walk by it and continue toward the lighthouse jetty.
For a quick but scenic workout, this is the perfect route to include in your 2 Days in Heraklion itinerary.
2. Laps along the walls
- Start Point: Georgiadis Park entrance (5 min walk from the hotel)
- Distance: ~3.7 km circuit
- What You’ll See: Shaded walkways, eucalyptus trees, families, fountains
- Best Time: Late morning or early evening
Georgiadis Park is a lovely oasis in the city and ideal for warming up before your run. The flat loops make it great for beginners or those easing into vacation cardio. You’ll pass children playing, quiet readers on benches, and the occasional outdoor yoga session.
It’s also featured in our list of Top Outdoor Activities for Families with Kids in Crete, which makes it a fantastic option for jogging parents traveling with children
3. Venetian Walls to Agios Andreas Bastion
- Start/End Point: Begin at Pili Vitouri, follow the walls
- Distance: ~2 km one way
- What You’ll See: Historic ramparts, open city views, grave of Nikos Kazantzakis
- Best Time: Early morning or sunset

This route is more than just a workout—it’s a run through history. You’ll start at Pili Vitouri and run along the Venetian walls, gradually climbing toward Agios Andreas Bastion. The views of the city below are worth every uphill step. And if you need motivation, remember: you’re running the same route locals used for centuries to patrol the city.
4. Coastal Jog from Olive Green Hotel to Karavolas Seaside Park
- Start/End Point: Olive Green Hotel to Karavolas Park
- Distance: 2.7 km one way
- What You’ll See: Sea views, palm trees, fountain
- Best Time: Early morning only
If you’re a more experienced runner or training for a longer event, this coastal route is incredibly satisfying. You’ll leave the city behind as you follow the coastline westward, eventually arriving at Karavolas Park. The air smells like salt and herbs, and the morning light over the sea is unforgettable.
5. Bonus Trail: Jogging Giouchtas Mountain near Archanes
- Start/End Point: The cross road of the provincial road Patsidon-Vathypetrou to Giouchtas summit and back
- Distance: ~8 km round trip with elevation
- What You’ll See: Cretan countryside, mountain flora, panoramic views
- Best Time: Morning, before heat sets in
This one’s a bonus for those willing to take a 20-minute taxi or rental car ride out of town. Giouchtas Mountain rises behind the village of Archanes and offers a trail jog like no other. You’ll pass through pine and oak as the view opens up over the Lassithi region. The incline is real, but so is the reward.

Wrapping Up Your Route
Heraklion isn’t just a place to eat, drink, and explore history. It is a city that has routes ideal for runners. Our suggestions concern routes with paved sidewalks or pedestrian streets. However, in the months of July and August when tourism and heat are at their peak, exercise should be done before 8:00 or after 21:00. Whether you’re fitting in a quick morning jog before museum hopping or escaping into the hills for a trail run, there’s a route here for every kind of runner.
And if you’re staying at Olive Green Hotel, you’re already one step ahead. With eco-conscious hospitality, modern comforts, and a location that lets you run in any direction, your wellness journey begins the moment you check in.
